Festival of Frugaltiy #56 - The Ten Commandments of Frugality

January 9, 2007 - Category: Frugal Living, Carnivals

Welcome to the Festival of Frugality #56!

This week I’m taking you back to the Old Testament time of Moses. God gave the Israel Ten Commandments to follow and obey (Exodus 20:2-17). In the same way there are time-tested and effective commandments that govern frugality.

The Ten Commandments of Frugality

1. Thou shall eat food that is cheap but healthy (Personal Finance for Students and Fresh Grads) and waste not leftovers (The Simple Dollar).

2. Thou shall reduce education costs with free money (The Frugal Momma) and cheaper textbooks (Free Money Finance).

3. Thou shall save money on gas (Binary Dollar).

4. Thou shall find best prices (Stingy Students) before purchasing books and textbooks.

5. Thou shall consider inexpensive vacations (The Digerati Life) and receive 5% cash back on all travel purchases (Ask Mr Credit Card’s Blog).

6. Thou shall find ways to cut health care costs (Financial Tips for WAHMs).

7. Thou shall recognize the true cost of buying brand name (An English Major’s Money).

8. Thou shall save money by giving old furniture a new look (Not Made Of Money).

9. Thou shall do thy best to reduce debt through consolidation or settlement (Queercents).

10. Thou shall be diligent to find even (66) more ways to be frugal (My Two Dollars) and ponder how frugal you really are (Becoming & Staying Debt Free).

Just as the ten commandments were not the only laws given in the Old Testament, there are other laws that govern frugality:

Thou shall learn to make rugs from old t-shirts (Frugal Money Management).
Thou shall comprehend the process of fermentation (Wisdom From Wenchypoo’s Mental Wastebasket).
Thou shall keep track of how much stuff you use in one year (No Credit Needed).
Thou shall consider frugal storage ideas (The Common Room).
Thou shall never pay credit card annual fees (Scott On Money).
Thou shall make the most of coupons (EveryDay Money).
Thou shall always use correct postage (makingourway).
Thou shall follow these steps if you blew your budget (Worldwide Success).
Thou shall try making a rock tumbler (The Scratching Post).
Thou shall compare what money type you are (LifeTraining - Online).
Thou shall visit the 100 most popular finance blogs (Wise Bread).
Thou shall consider the Bible as a guide to personal finance (Getting Green).
Thou shall compare unit prices when grocery shopping (Penny-Pinching).

Just as Proverbs 10:4 advises us “Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth“, we would do well to follow the commands that govern frugality.

More frugality commandments can be found next week when Fire Finance will host the Festival of Frugality #57.

  12. […] Savvy Steward put the Festival of Frugality into a Ten Commandments theme this week and he managed to squeeze twenty seven posts in to boot.
